Bug fix release of xGPS Maps Manager
Small post to say that we have released a small bug fix release of xGPS Maps Manager. This version doesn’t improve anything excepting that now it is working with the new Google Maps changes and the zoom levels have been “unified”. The zoom level you see on the left of the window correspond to the zoom level of the current view of the map. If you enter the same number in the text area for the downloaded maps zoom level, it will download the maps at the same zoom level you are seeing. It means that 17 is the most detailed zoom level, and 1 is the less detailed one.
xGPS Maps Manager can be downloaded here:

really really thank you!!
so excited, i was trying it immediately, but.. uhm.. it’s not working actually, i will try it again tomorrow (the last available day for me!
)
after selected the area, when i click to donwload, it said that the map will be approximatly 0.028MB (a big area, zoom level 12).. click ok, and nothing seems to happen!
really thanks for your work!

It is working for me just downloading at really really slow speeds, really slow. I also thank you for your work and can’t wait for turn by turn. Do you plan on having voice turn by turn with the first release, or at all?

This Blog reminds me the reason I like bloging so much, the interaction is very important with readers and you guys have it right. Looks great too, will be back for more posts, David the mover.

Does this mean that now I can download the maps at all the zoom levels if I choose “0″ as level, or this will download only the most detailed zoom level? I hope you’ll put this feature soon, because it’s annoying to download the maps at all the zoom levels manually… thanks
November 13th, 2008 at 9:46 am
You still have to download all the levels manually.
November 13th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Hi guys,
how can i update the version on my iphone?
tnx.
November 13th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Thanks again, it works now.
Regarding further development - it would be nice to have two additional features: 1) multi-level downloading in Maps Manager (i.e., possibility to set levels range like 10-17); 2) maps switching withing xGPS (to download several maps when there is a good WiFi connection, and then put them to device and switch between maps while traveling).
Is there a chance for these features to be implemented?
November 13th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Hi, I can’t select area (red selection) with mac
November 13th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
after a lot of attempts, i downloaded all the map.. 73MB zoom level from 11 to 17..
when i put it into the iPhone, i notice that there is some part which is missing.. i hope i won’t need those parts of the map..

When downloading multiple zoom levels how do I store them all on my phone without them overwriting each other. Each downloaded file is named xGPS_map. Do I just add a 1, 2, 3 and so on at the end of the file?
November 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Is there any way to download the xGPS Maps Manager using windows Vista
November 13th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Same as “mrv”…
Can”t get the area selection tool to work on OSX. It did work with the previous version.
Let’s hope you find a fix for this.
Thanks in advance
November 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Forget my last comment… It does work !
“mrv” : Do not try to draw a rectangle, just click and add points to make a polygon thats suits the area you need.
November 15th, 2008 at 1:08 am
Does anyone that uses this program have an answer for me regarding what to do with multiple downloaded maps? i am really confused as to how to store them and be able to switch between them if need be when on the road. if it is as simple as just chainging the ending of the name then cool…please help.
Sneike you probably can answer since you downloaded so many versions.
Thanks a lot!!!
November 15th, 2008 at 7:07 am
@Brian did you have this problem with the first version?
I haven’t gotten around to trying out the new one yet, but when I downloaded multiple levels in the old version it only gave me 1 file. Are you restarting the manager each time you download a new level? That would make more than 1 for sure
If not I would try re-downloading the manager and see if that helps
November 15th, 2008 at 8:34 am
@Brian Maybe I can help you.
“When downloading multiple zoom levels how do I store them all on my phone without them overwriting each other.”
The different zoom-levels are all stored in the same file…
“how to store them and be able to switch between them if need be when on the road.”
What I did: after downloading some parts of Germany in different zoom-levels (they are all stored in one file), I quit the program and put the file xGPS_map.db into a folder named Germany. Then I started the program again to start a new empty download-session, maybe Hong Kong. Again you get a file called xGPS_map.db. I put this one in a folder called HK.
If I want to continue download some other parts of Germany, I put the file from the Germany-folder back to where it was when it was created. Start the app and go on downloading.
So, I have two different db-files and put either HK or Germany on my iPhone.
But this means, you need a computer to transfer one of your db-files to the iPhone, and if you need the other one, you put that one on your phone.
Its not possible to have two db-files at the same time in your iPhone.
Correct, Mathieu?

When we can program an itinerary??
November 15th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Thanks guys I did not realize that you could keep adding to existing downloads to get multiple zoom levels…that fixes my problem/answers my questions

Hi,
Today Google Maps released the Argentina Maps, but even though I can watch them online and with the GMDL, I can’t seem to see any information under xGPSManager, it’s like it didn’t take the update.
Do you guys have any suggestion?
Thank you! bye!
November 18th, 2008 at 5:43 am
Thanks for the great app!
I can’t upload maps to IPhone. The xGPS Manager does not show anything in the Device Selection window. IPhone and notebook are connected to the same Wi-Fi router that has no firewall configured. Disabling firewall on notebook didn’t help.
Does anyone know what could be the problem? What protocol/port is used for uploading maps?
Thanks.
November 18th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Hi guys,
Sorry to be so annoying but I have a strange situation here, let me comment it:
* On the maps.google.com website I can see the entire map of Argentina, with streets and all the stuff (which is cool)
* on the iPhone Google Maps app I can see the Argentina Maps with the streets name, but is not showing as maps.google.com, there’s still a few things missing.
* and on the xGPS software, on Argentina I can see a grey surface, just like it was 2 weeks ago.
I mean, I have 3 different Maps, I though xGPS soft was getting the data from maps.google.com, which I assume this is incorrect.
What could I do to get the maps.google.com argentina map on the xGPS software? I’ve also tried xGPS Manager with no success, it’s still showing a grey surface.
Any help you could provide would be great!!
Thank you! bye!
November 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Sorry for this stupid question…
How and where should I install this .jar files???
November 19th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
The problem about Argentina maps is beause xGPS and xGPS Maps manager use the old maps version of Google Maps. It will be corrected in the next version.
@kumero: You don’t need ton install jar file. Just be sure to have JAVA installed and then double click on your jar file to run it.
November 19th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Thanks for the head up Mathieu!
November 19th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
I want to thank you so much for the hard work that you have put into this program. It works great, and for you to do this and release it as a free product is great.
Thanks again.
November 19th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
I can’t upload the maps to iPhone!
Does it need to install something like openssh to iPhone before using xGPS manager?
November 21st, 2008 at 8:39 am
have the same problem as Slava. can’t upload maps to iphone. the device is not showing in the window. mac osx 10.5.5.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Hi Mathieu, do you have any news about the xGPS Soft update? I mean, I’d really like to start using my iGPS360 module!!
Sorry for being so annoying, it’s just that I can’t wait to fully use it!!
Thank youuuu!!
November 21st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
To upload maps to your iphone you must be an experimented user and have the capability to transfer the generated files by xGPS Maps Manager to your iphone through sftp (ssh). We are developping an easiest way to do that so in the mean time please be patient.
The new release is scheduled to the 30th November if we have no delay. It seems there is already some delay unfortunately. But you can still use the current version which works quite well.
November 21st, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Hi Mathieu,
You stated: “The new release is scheduled to the 30th November if we have no delay. It seems there is already some delay unfortunately. But you can still use the current version which works quite well.”
But the current version doesn’t support Argentina Maps, :(.
I hate to be this annoying, but is there something you could do just to update the xGPS Maps Manager Jar file to include the Argentina Map before 30th November?
Thanks a lot for your support and for all your answers, really appreciate it!!

November 23rd, 2008 at 11:19 pm

November 23rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
@Vincent , I alredy solve isue to slect maps (tks) in any case this is a guide for MAC users:
download xGPS manager
Then
open file “main.class”
Go to the zone that you like to downlaod
Press “add a region”
Press ctrl and tab (you will se a red dot)
After this select 4 angels (red dot’s) in the same way
And now you will se red filter on the top of selected area
Now you can press “download select map regions”
After this map will be download you will found in a folder xGPS manager file “xGPS_map.db”
This file you need to put in iphone /var/mobile/Library/
After this you can navigated in off line mode for this selected zone
November 23rd, 2008 at 11:33 pm
@mrv: yes you can update to 2.2 (do not forget to apply all dev team’s recomandations). I haven’t tested deeply xgps on 2.2 but basic functionalities work.
November 24th, 2008 at 12:15 am
@mathieu , tks , your are mean, dev team of xGPS or from QiuckPwn?
November 24th, 2008 at 10:01 am

Anyone else having problems with these new problems? The xgps program on the iPod will not download map data from the internet, and the new xgps manager does not download map information either. Both just display a gray screen.
November 24th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Just update to the new version. It solves the problem.
November 24th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
I did update, thats what gave me the problem. Neither the old version or the new will work correctly for me.
November 24th, 2008 at 6:29 pm
In xGPS, delete all the maps (Go to settings and Delete downloaded maps). In xGPS Maps manager, delete the generated xGPS_db file and try again. It works!
November 24th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Yeah I’m not sure, that doesn’t work either. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it, but it just doesn’t seem to be working for me, but if it’s working for you it must be something on my end.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
What version do you see in xGPS when you launch it, press on Settins and then scroll down to the bottom to see the Version row.
Also make sure to have cleaned your maps as I told you before. Moreover be sure to have deactivated the Offline mode.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Mathieu-
are you developing this software in the US or are you over seas? Does it look like a 30th release is still in the picture? Is the plan for turn by turn to work in all US cities?
Thanks
November 24th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I’ve made sure the map data has been deleted, the xgps version on my ipod is 1.0.1-5, and offline mode is deactivated as well.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
@ Brian: Not we are based in Europe, Switzerland. But turn by turn directions will use Google so as long as your country is supported by google it should work. I don’t think the 30th will be THE date :-). I think we will have about 2-3 days of delay. Sorry for that.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
there are other ways to generate maps? You can use tools google maps?
this application and too slow and over again by errors
November 24th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Hello,
I Downloaded this manager, and I am getting the following messages when I start it:
Data corrupt !
Unable to download tile !
Nothing happens….
I’ve tried to download it on my Ubuntu Intrepid and Windows XP… got the same….
November 24th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Mathieu
no need to apologize at all! This is great that you are working on this for those of us that are using it. I am amazed at the software so far, using it with the iGPS360 is great, I am really looking forward to the development of turn by turn. Thanks again for the hard dedicated work.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I am also getting gray maps all of a sudden. Was working this morning, but not anymore. Using v 1.0-1.5 on iPhone and using the java based app up above (xgpsmanager -2). Tried it on a PC and a Mac, as well. Gray maps all around, even after deleting the .db file, trying different computers, etc.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Really weird. It’s working for me. Anyone else having the same problem? Is it working for somebody?
November 24th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
just tried and it is working fine for me.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Ok fine. Be careful to not to download many maps at once from the same IP address. Google doesn’t like that and sometime blocks your IP.
November 24th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Maybe you have downloaded the maps for a different zoom-level?
Try to zoom out a few times, if the map is only downloaded for example at zoom-level 5 you can’t expect to see anything on level 1.
Bye Anton
November 24th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
I thought of google blocking my IP as well, but I also tried it at school where I have never used this program before and it does not work either. Not sure what the problem is.
November 25th, 2008 at 1:09 am
I have tried from different parts but still not right. even now already tried 2 times not ever gone through.
no other possibility.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:06 am
Effective Nov 24 my xgps software stopped working on iPhone. It’s not showing any maps. Is there any fix. Thanks, Vijay
November 25th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
For those who have problems for downloading maps please try and report the following:
1. Delete all the downloaded maps in xGPS and xGPS Maps Manager
2. In xGPS, Go to settings, scroll down and select the language to English.
3. Exit the application
4. Relaunch it and try to download
5. If it still not work, please go to this website and tell what you see:
http://mt1.google.com/mt?v=w2.88&hl=en&x=67928&y=46325&z=17
6. If you see a part of a map, please report where you are trying to show a map (i.e. in which country and city are you?)
November 25th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I am also getting grey maps on xGPS and xGPS Maps Manager - both were working fine previously. I have followed Mathieu’s instructions, I can see part of a map in the top left corner of my screen at the listed website. I am in Brisbane Australia.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Mathieu,
first of all thanks for this nice application, and congratulations for it
I have this small problem:
I have downloaded the same map at different zooms (the total of the maps has ~115 mb). Then I noted that there was a missing rectangle at the the the zoom 13.
I opened Maps Manager again and I navigated to the missing area, I changed the zoom to 13 and the maps was missing at the Maps Manager too!
I suspected that he wont try to download the map again while he already has all the maps around.
So I moved the file of the maps to try getting the missing area, and voilà: the missing area showed up!
But I dont want to download all the maps again.
So I see two possibles solutions: merge the two files or make something to the Maps Manager try to get the missing area again… any suggestion?
thanks in advance
November 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
never mind
I think I got it now. I just used the zoom 13 again and it worked.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I still see nothing but gray, no maps show up when doing the above. When going to the link, I see a small square of a map in the upper left hand corner that has 2 roads on it. I am in York, Pennsylvania, United States.
November 25th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
What i would like to know is where the “.db” is saved to on vista (i know, i wish i had xp too :P). I tried downloading a map yesterday and it said it downloaded successfully but i cant find where it downloaded to. Also is it the iphone directory /var/mobile/Library/ that the map goes in?

Hi !
First of all, great application !
I have come across a problem, when this application is downloading it chokes my router. I can ping another machine in my network locally without problems however outgoing starts to timeout.
Also when i ping the local ip of my router all is ok until i turn on this tool to download maps. It starts out quite fast but slows down after about 10 seconds and i notice my network starts to fail. Stopping the application and all works again.
I’m on a 10 mbit line.

xGPS Maps Manager is again bugged due to Google Maps change (see latest blog post). A release is scheduled for this weekend.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
I have a problem uploading maps to the iPod touch.
Used hardware
• Mac mini with Mac OS X.4.11
• and/or Powerbook Pismo (upgraded to G4) running Mac OS X.4.11
• iPod touch 1st generation with 8GB
Trying to upload maps doens’t work at all on both machines. They are downloaded to the Macs the iPod does not appear under Services like described in xgpsmanager. Also the hint with setting xGPS on the iPod to english (both Macs and the iPod have german as their default language) doesn’t change anything.
Apart from that great software
Regards
Michael

I also have problems uploading maps to my iPod touch (1.gen, 8GB). I can download maps to my Macs running Mac OS X.4.11 but the iPod is never listed under devices like described in the upload window.
I tried it on both of my Macs, a Mac mini (G4) and a upgraded (G4) Pismo. Both have their default language ‘german’. I tried to set the iPod to ‘english’ like described above but had no luck.
Regards
Michael

That’s because this functionality (the upload to device button) is not yet available. It will be in future releases.

For me the main think on todo list it possible to manually download all zoom level in one time
it’s a little bit annoying when You have to mark region all the time for each level
the rest is great, thx
