Introduction

In this guide we will show you how to use xGPS to use it as geotagging utility. It could be used for example to add the position of where you have taken your photo with your camera.

What do you need?

• A jailbreaked iPhone
• xGPS 1.2.7 (with Cydia)
• xGPS Manager (MacOSX, Linux or Windows)
• GPSPhotoLinker for Mac (If you search an application for windows or linux try this link)
• iPhoto 09
• KeepAwake and Backgrounder (with Cydia) to launch xGPS in background and to keep the GPS running when your phone is locked

Activating GPX logging

Logging of a user's position to a file is activated under the Settings menu. By doing that all your move will be recorded by xGPS and you will be able to send these data to your computer to use it in a meaningful way.

See "GPX Logging" sub-menu to check the total size of the logs, the number of logs and the possibility to clear all the logs from the device (W'arning': unreversible).

Transferring your tracks to a computer

xGPS features a Wireless Connection mode to allow wireless transmission of data to the desktop application xGPS Manager. You can use it to transfer

• Note that in order to transfer wirelessly data, a wireless network is required, with the desktop computer connected to it.

Connecting with xGPS Manager:

On your desktop, start xGPS Manager and select Manage GPX Traces. On your device, go to Settings then Wireless Transfer. In xGPS Manager, click on Retrieve device traces. All GPX logs present on the devices will be transfered, including previously imported ones.

Accessing the GPX files

The downloaded log files are stored (for the latest xGPS Manager version) under:

•  /Users/<your name>/Documents/xGPS Manager/GPX Logs for Mac OS X
• My Documents\xGPS Manager\GPX Logs for Windows
• ~/xGPS Manager/GPX Logs for Linux

The files are auto-named with a time-stamp prefix to sort them more easily.

Note that although each file ends with *.log. they are in fact GPX files.

Geotagging with softwares

Many softwares are available on different platforms for adding to pictures geolocation data.

GPSPhotoLinker (Mac OS X)

GPSPhotoLinker is a simple and free application that will incorporate GPS location data into your pictures losslessly. However, there are some compatibility issues with GPSPhotoLinker and the GPX files provided by xGPS.

Fixing the GPX files

As xGPS seems not to produce correct GPX data file (if someone could help us about that subject please contact us: http://xwaves.net/?inc=contact). There are some ways to "fix" the bad GPX file. You can use Julien Dufrenne's method & scripts (link to scripts and tutorial)

Other details, tips and tricks

• Downloading maps to xGPS is not required in order to allow GPX logging.
